Video: Whale Shoots Rainbow Out of Its Blowhole

Whales are truly marvelous creatures, but the ability to spew rainbows out of their blowholes seem a bit far-fetched. What’s next, giant pots of gold and green pants?

Not exactly.

Mark Girardeau may have not found any gold, but he did discover that under the right conditions, whales can create their own rainbows by blowing water into the air. The below video of a humpback whale was captured when Girardeau was operating a camera drone off the coast of California’s Newport Beach on Sunday.

Apparently, it is not too uncommon for whales to produce their own rainbows—something they can’t exactly enjoy themselves. Another video from 2011 also shows a different whale pulling off the same feat near the coast of Nova Scotia.
