Video: Clever Orca Uses Fish Trap to Catch Birds
OutdoorHub Reporters 02.01.16
We really hope orcas don’t start using this trick against anglers.
Killer whales are exceedingly smart animals, which isn’t all that surprising, seeing as how they have the second-heaviest brains among all marine mammals. This video has been floating around on the internet and shows Kalia, a captive orca at SeaWorld San Diego, use a piece of fish to lure in birds close enough to snatch. The killer whale then backs off just enough for one of the birds to try lunging for the snack. Of course, it turns out to be a fatal mistake for the bird.
Not a bad trick to get some variety in their diets, but certainly terrifying to their handlers. Next time you see fish mysteriously floating up next to your boat, you may want to check around for orcas. At least we can take some comfort in the fact that orca attacks on humans in the wild are practically unheard of, even though they will occasionally steal some fish.
