Dramatic Video of Gray Whale Being Freed After Becoming Tangled in 50 Feet of Netting

This weekend, whale-watching boats spotted a young California grey whale tangled in a fishing net off the coast of Orange County. After getting permission from the National Marine Fisheries Services, Dave Anderson and members of Capt. Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Safari went to work to free the animal.

The rescuers spent over 24 hours this weekend trying to free the whale culminating in the events featured in the video below.

The volunteers also discovered other dead animals in the netting including a leopard shark,  angel sharks, several different species of fish, and a sea-lion. “This whale was towing an entire ecosystem behind it,” Anderson said to the LA Times.
