Record Year for Ivory Seizures is a Sign of Increased Elephant Poaching

2011 was not a good year for elephants or other animals hunted for their ivory. According to the ETIS (Elephant Trade Information System), there were several major ivory seizures accounting for more than 23 tons of elephant ivory in 2011 alone. This figure does not even include the numerous smaller seizures around the globe. In contrast there were “only” 10 tons of Ivory seized last year. This dramatic increase accounts for the highest amount of illegal ivory seizures in recorded history. To put this figure into perspective the total amount of ivory seized globally in 2011 represents nearly 2500 elephants. These astounding figures are not a good sign for conservationists and hunters alike. Unfortunately this trend is not likely to stop due to skyrocketing demand from Asian markets in places like China, and increased sophistication on the part of the poachers.
