First Look: The Casio Smart Outdoor Watch

Most smart watches can’t take the abuse that outdoorsmen dish out. With that need in mind Casio created the Smart Outdoor Watch (WSD-F10) that’s as rugged as you are.

The first thing you will notice is that the Smart Outdoor Watch is bigger than your average smart watch. That’s because it’s packing some serious features into a watch that’s Military standard MIL-STD-810G rated and water resistant up to 50 meters. With that being said the watch does not feel big nor does it look out of the ordinary on an average-sized wrist. The watch also features a bigger-than-average 1.3-inch, 320 x 320 watch face which allows the wearer to get all sorts of information with just a quick glance.

After playing with the watch for a while you really get a sense of how well built it is. It’s also comfortable to wear with its soft urethane band, and it also draws a lot of compliments for its rugged style. Speaking of style, the watch comes preloaded with a number of customizable watch faces, and you can also download a number of other watch faces from the Android store. The watch face also features a dual layer display with monochrome LCD. This mode gives you the date and time without taking almost any battery life which is perfect for long fishing, cycling, or hiking trips.

There are three hardware buttons ( “App”, “Tool”, and Home) on the side of the watch that allow you to quickly jump to different modes. Pressing the “Tool” button will open up a number of specialized watch screens. The screens include a compass app, an altimeter, a barometer, a sunrise/sunset display, a tide graph, and a custom gauge called “My Graph” that allows you to track your activity levels and calories burned throughout the day. Casio also preloaded some popular outdoor apps like RunKeeper, ViewRanger, and MyRadar.

All of the features packed into this device are pretty impressive, but the biggest surprise after using the watch was the battery life. The battery life is something that no other smartwatch I have worn can compete with, and it’s especially important given the lack of outlets in the outdoors. You can even make the battery last for over 30 days which is something no other smart watch can compete with.

Not having to worry about breaking this watch while being active is something that’s hard to describe. Having quickly broken a number of other watches ( a Pebble, Apple watch, and even a Suunto Observer) the ruggedness that the Casio Outdoor Smart Watch offers is a breath of fresh air. No more having to take your smart watch off before being active is something I could really get used to.

Stayed tuned for an in-depth review.

I enjoy nearly all types of outdoor activities, especially those which allow me to travel to new and exciting locations. I love power sports whether they are on the water, roads, trails, or simply on untraversed terrain. I also have a particular obsession with anything riding on two wheels. As an avid motorcycle rider I try to spend as much time as possible on my bike, which in turn has allowed me to explore some of Michigan's most enchanting wilderness areas. Additionally, I enjoy and participate in many types of shooting sports, both recreational and competitive. I guess I try to do a little bit of every thing outdoors, and I am constantly searching for new and exciting outdoor activities. Testing.
