Abel Unveils Two New Pawl Click Reels: “Spey” and “Switch” to Meet Growing Interest

CAMARILLO, Calif. – To meet the demands of steelhead, salmon and other big water anglers using Spey-rod casting techniques, Abel designed and machined the sport’s definitive tools: the Abel Spey Reel and Abel Switch Reel for 2012.
Featuring fully enclosed frames and Abel’s time-tested external adjustable pawl-click drag, the reels are styled in an “old school” fashion, reminiscent of classic European Spey reels, but with a craftsmanship only possible in a made-in-the-USA version.
The Spey, weighing 9.0 ounces, at 1.100-inches wide, is the newest reel is designed for 8- to 10-weight Spey flylines. The Abel Spey is machined from 6061-T650 cold finished aerospace-quality aluminum.
A tradition carried over from European fisheries in Northeast and Canadian waters for Atlantic salmon and sea trout, modern Spey techniques have made giant inroads in the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia for steelhead, coho (silver) salmon and other big water targets requiring a long presentation.
The Abel Spey Reel is priced at $500 in solid black.
At 3.7-inches diameter and 1.00-inch width, the 8.5-ounce Abel Switch reel has been engineered for 5- through 7-weight Spey lines.
“Used for steelhead or Alaska-size rainbows, for example, a ‘switch’ outfit can satisfy an angler’s requirements whether fishing in a modest-size stream, larger river, salt estuary or lake. It enables the fly-fisher to switch from single- to double-handed Spey casting, which accounts for the style’s rapid growth in popularity,” said Don R. Swanson, Abel president.
