JACKSON – 2011 marks the 7th year of alligator hunting in Mississippi.  The Pearl River Zone near the Ross Barnett Reservoir is open to permitted hunters on September 9, 10, 16, and 17. The Pascagoula River Zone will be open in Jackson County on September 23, 24, 30, and October 1.  Hunting hours are from noon until 6:00am the following day for each permitted hunt.    Permitted hunters were selected from a computer-based lottery of 2,892 people who purchased alligator hunting applications in June this year.  Selected applicants must attend an alligator hunting training course before participating in alligator hunts.  There are 60 permits issued for each day of hunting in each zone, a total of 480 permits. Each hunter is allowed to harvest 2 alligators over 4 feet long, only one of which may exceed 7 feet.

Additionally, the private lands alligator hunting season is open September 9 thru October 3.  There are 83 permitted properties within the 25 available counties that are open to alligator hunting on private lands.   Open counties include; Adams, Attala, Bolivar, Carroll, Claiborne, Copiah, Hinds, Holmes, Humphreys, Issaquena, Jefferson, Lawrence, Leake, Leflore, Madison, Marion, Pearl River, Rankin, Simpson, Sharkey, Sunflower, Washington, Wilkinson, and Yazoo.  Private lands within the open counties must contain at least 20 acres of privately owned surface water to qualify for an alligator harvest voucher.  Each application requires special documentation and landowner permission.
