2011 Cabela’s King Kat Classic Tournament Results

This past Friday and Saturday October 28th & 29th the Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Trail hit the waters of the Mississippi River at Burlington, Iowa for the Cabela’s King Kat Classic. In the event the top anglers from 12 different states including North Carolina, West Virginia, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania were competing for this major cash and prizes.

We want to thank the Greater Burlington Partnership for making this event possible. Burlington also hosted the Greater Burlington Recreation and Outdoor Expo that drew in hundreds of outdoor enthusiast during the final day of competition. We would also like to thank Delbert and Carmen and all the Oquawka Boat teams on hand. Oquawka Boats is the “Official Boat” of the Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Trail. Also Harry Simmons from Mustad Hooks, Dennis Coons from Rippin Lips, Steve and Lisa Douglas from Monster Rod Holders, Jerry Cline II from Tanglin With Catfish and Ron Gooding Insurance for all being on hand this weekend. Several hundred spectators were on hand as 101.7 The Bull broadcasted live nearly all day from the Burlington Riverfront           

Results for the Top 5 Teams

Taking first place was the Patterson, Illinois team of Bill and Jim Newingham with a total weight of 65.66 pounds. After being in 18th place on day one Bill and Jim made an amazing comeback by weighing in 43 pounds on day 2 to capture the 2011 Cabela’s King Kat Classic Champion Title. The team was fishing 5 miles north of Burlington using cut shad in 20 feet of water and catching 35-40 fish during the 2 days of competition. The team received a 2072 Oquawka Boat/Trailer with a 115 Evinrude Outboard, 80lb thrust Minn kota trolling motor and a 788 Humminbird electronics valued at over $30,000.00.

In second place was the team of Joe Grzanich of Pekin, Illinois and Ron Grzanich Sr of Groveland, Illinois with a weight of 61.88 pounds and earning $2,500.00. After being in first place on day 1 Joe and Ron came within 4 pounds of taking it all on Saturday. The team fished the Ft. Madison area in 18 feet of water using cut shad to catch 12 fish on Friday and 8 fish on Saturday.            

Third place went to Ryan Daniel of Burlington, Iowa and Chad Fortes of Oquawka, Illinois weighing in 54.81 pounds and earning $1,200.00. Ryan and Chad were fishing close to the port of Burlington in 15-22 feet of water using shad as bait. The team was in 22nd place on day one and made an amazing comeback by catching 30 fish in the 2 day event. Each team is allowed to weigh in their top 5 fish each day.  

Harold Fuller of Cresent, Iowa and Philip Colburn of Omaha, Nebraska took fourth place with a weight of 53.72 pounds earning $1,000.00. Harold and Philip were fishing Skunk River in 10-15 feet of water using shad as bait. The team caught 15 fish on Friday and 9 on Saturday.

Fifth place went to Ray Sanders of Rock Falls, Illinois and Robin Sanders of Malta, Illinois weighing in 52 pounds and earning a $1,000.00 gift certificate from Cabela’s. Ray and Robin were fishing the Montrose area in 15-20 feet of water using shad and creek chubs as bait. The team caught 75 fish throughout the event.

First Place Adult/Youth Team

The top Adult/Youth team in the event was the team of Mike and Trapper Salazar of St. Charles, Iowa with a weight of 11.73 pounds and earning a $500.00 savings bond from Ron Gooding Insurance.

Big Fish

Capturing Big Fish of the event was the team of Mike and Luke Blint of West Point, Iowa with a 13.74 pound catfish which earned the team $1,000.00.

Weather: It was cool in the mornings with temps starting in the mid 30’s and warming up to sunny skies and temperatures at weigh-in in the low 60’s. Friday it was windy in the later part of the tournament hours with winds 10-15 mph.
