The Ontario Knife Company Wins Prestigious “Best Of The Best” Award from Field & Stream Magazine

Field & Stream Magazine’s “Best of the Best” award is one of the most prestigious accolades in the outdoor gear industry.  Each year, expert field testers at Field & Stream evaluate hundreds of the best new outdoor products, narrowing them down to the most outstanding equipment across several categories. With the conclusion of this exhaustive testing, the Ontario Knife Company®’s Blackbird SK-5™, designed by survivalist Paul Scheiter, was awarded “Best of the Best” in the knife category for 2011.  Find the full article at www.BestKnifeOfTheYear.com.

“We are very proud to have received the recognition from Field & Stream as the best knife product introduced in 2011,” said Ken Trbovich. “Ontario Knife Company has always focused on knives that incorporate function, rugged materials and stylish design.  The Blackbird SK-5 epitomizes this philosophy.  To have it recognized as the ultimate outdoorsmen knife is a thrilling and humbling accomplishment.”

Paul Scheiter, the designer of the Blackbird SK-5, developed the knife with the goal of achieving maximum function, delivered through pure simplicity. “I believe that the less complicated a product is, the better it will perform when your life depends on it. The Blackbird SK-5 is comfortable to use, has ideal cutting geometry, and is extremely durable… all of the things necessary for the most demanding wilderness survival tasks. The Blackbird is a timeless classic, and I am proud to have partnered with The Ontario Knife Company in bringing this product to life. Their deep roots in American manufacturing and their commitment to delivering products that save lives are things that I deeply admire,” said Scheiter.

Paul Scheiter is also the owner of the world renowned sheath company, Hedgehog Leatherworks, which produces a high performance aftermarket leather sheath for the Blackbird SK-5 Knife that is available directly through www.HedgehogLeatherworks.com.

Because of its emphasis on pure function with no frills, the Blackbird has proven itself to be an invaluable tool for survivalists, soldiers, hunters, and outdoorsmen of all walks. The knife itself is comprised of a full tang 154CM high grade stainless steel blade that is fitted with black micarta handles. It is 10 inches overall, with 5 inches of sharpened blade and 5 inches of handle. At just under 3/16” thick, the knife is ideally suited to detailed carving, but also excels at tasks that involve splitting through wood. The steel is heat treated to Rockwell Hardness 58-60, and comes with a hand sharpened edge that will easily skin small and big game alike. Perhaps most importantly, ergonomics are at the forefront of this design, so the knife is comfortable to hold for prolonged periods of intense work. The package is topped off with an American made MOLLE compatible nylon sheath.  All of these elements add up to deliver a “must have” survival system.

Like other Ontario Knife products, the Blackbird SK-5 complies with the Berry Amendment, as it is proudly 100 percent made in the U.S.A.
