Virginia Angler Sets New State Record for Freshwater Drum

A day of fishing at Buggs Island Lake on July 10, 2012 put Nancy Cash’s name in the record books for her huge freshwater drum. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) State Record Fish Committee certified her fish a state record on August 8, just short of a month after the catch.
Cash, from Martinsville, hooked the 26-pound, 8-ounce drum on a Sting Silver Spoon. It measured 38.5 inches in length. The fight lasted only 15 minutes, at the end of which her fishing partner Jimmy Cannoy was able to slide a net under the fish to bring it into the boat.
The freshwater drum was taken to Bobcat’s Bait and Tackle in Clarksville to confirm its species, size and weight. VDGIF Fisheries Biologist Vic DiCenzo was present to certify the fish, according to a VDGIF press release.
Cash’s record easily beat the previous record of 22 pounds, 6 ounces caught in Kerr Reservoir in 2008. The fish still has a long way to go to beat the world record of 54 pounds, 8 ounces caught by angler Benny Hull caught from Nickajack Lake, Tennessee on April 20, 1972.
