Friday, September 7 – First Free Friday.
The museum is open and free to the public from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Calvert Dance Band will perform on the outdoor stage starting at 6:30 p.m. Bring lawn chairs and a picnic supper. Docents will be in every gallery talking about the exhibits. Visit Drum Point Lighthouse and enjoy 30-minute boat rides on the Wm. B. Tennison sponsored by M&T Bank. FREE.
Saturday, September 8 – Fossil Field Experience
Do you know why Calvert County is known for its shark’s teeth? Did you know that they can be 20 million years old? Join a museum educator and discover the clues found buried in the sand, telling tales of life long before humans walked the earth; 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. $20 per person. Sunday, September 9 – Cruise on the Dee of St. Mary’s with Captain Jackie Russell Take a two hour cruise aboard the Dee of St. Mary’s, one of the few skipjacks built on the Western Shore, departing from the Lore Oyster House at 2:00 p.m. $20 per person. Thursday, September 13 – “Steam Coffin” Presentation
John Busch will give a multi-media presentation on his book “Steam Coffin” about the steamship Savannah at 7:00 p.m. in the museum auditorium. Historian and author John Laurence Busch presents the steamship as the first example of globalized high technology in history. FREE. The book may be purchased in the Museum Store and a book signing will follow the presentation.
Friday, September 14 – Opening of Endangered Species: Watermen of the Chesapeake
Exhibit
Join photographer Glen McClure at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium and learn about his experiences with watermen and his photograph portraits of them in the auditorium. FREE.
The exhibit takes visitors on a photographic journey to explore the proud heritage and strength of individual watermen and women of the Chesapeake Bay. The Endangered Species: Watermen of the Chesapeake exhibit features black-and-white photography by Norfolk’s Glen McClure. The photographs are integrated with text describing the history of the fishers, crabbers and oystermen, and those who pack and export seafood, celebrating the culture of the watermen while lamenting their seeming demise.
Saturday, September 15 – Waterman for a Day
Experience life and work in an oyster packing house, use oyster tongs, work in the shucking room and sing work songs from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Learn about oyster biology and how to help restore Crassostrea virginica from the Southern Maryland Oyster Cultivation Society (SMOCS). Dockside tours on the skipjack Dee of St. Mary’s. FREE.
Sunday, September 16 – Dr. Rita Colwell
Learn about the signs, symptoms, and treatment of the bacteria, Vibrio vulnificus at 2:00 p.m. in the auditorium. Dr. Rita Cowell, internationally renowned global infectious disease specialist will speak about this flesh eating bacteria found in the Chesapeake Bay, estuaries, brackish ponds, and coastal waters. FREE.
Saturday, September 22 – Lighthouse Adventure Cruise
Participants will cruise the Southern Bay as they see six Chesapeake lighthouses aboard a private charter boat. The cost is $130; $120 for members. Call 410-326-2042 ext. 41 to register. Space is limited.
Thursday, September 27 – Little Minnows
Windy Days – Come Fly A Kite: Children ages 3 – 5 years are invited to participate from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. $4 members; $5 non-members. Space is limited. Pre-registration suggested. Call 410-326-2042 ext. 41.
Friday, September 28 – Otter Breakfast
Learn about otter enrichment, habitat, and the mischief these mammals get into with their playful curiosity. Go behind the scenes to talk with a keeper and observe a feeding at 9:00 a.m. A continental breakfast will be provided. Children must be at least 8 years old and accompanied by an adult to participate. Space is limited, pre-registration required. Fee is $15 per person, $10 for members and includes museum admission. Sunday, September 30 – Cheap Trick & Blondie
Take a trip down memory lane on September 30 with Cheap Trick & Blondie on the PNC Waterside Pavilion stage. Tickets are $42 and $52 (additional fees apply) and available at www.calvertmarinemuseum.com, by calling 1-800-787-9454, or by visiting Prince Frederick Ford/Dodge. Gates open at 6:00 and show time is 7:30 p.m. Enjoy a night a music, food, drinks, and fun.
