Starting Monday (Aug. 27), anglers fishing in ocean waters off Ilwaco can keep up to two chinook salmon as part their two-salmon daily limit.
With that change, anglers will be allowed to keep up to two chinook per day in all four marine areas off the Washington coast.
All ocean areas (marine areas 1-4) are open to salmon fishing seven days a week. Wild coho must be released in all four areas.
Pat Pattillo, salmon policy coordinator for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), said the department initially limited anglers fishing off Ilwaco to one chinook as part of a two-salmon daily limit to ensure that the fishery would remain open for the entire season.
“We started the season with a conservative catch limit for chinook in the southern ports,” said Pattillo. “But enough of the chinook catch guideline remains to allow anglers two chinook per day off Ilwaco without much risk of exceeding the guideline.”
