Montana: Plan Now to Attend! Interagency Hunting and Recreation Open Houses along the HiLine

Here’s your chance to talk face-to-face with a friendly person who is familiar with the area and can answer your specific hunting and recreation questions. If you’re one of the many people who enjoy the outdoors and like to take advantage of the countless outdoor recreation opportunities in Montana, chances are you have visited a variety of public lands administered by different State and Federal agencies. It’s always a good idea to plan ahead, know where you’re going, and become familiar with what regulations and opportunities apply to different public and private lands you’ll visit.
“While websites, brochures, maps and manuals are all helpful, sometimes it’s nice to just be able to talk with a real person and get immediate and accurate answers,” HiLine District Manager Mark Albers said. “We’ll have representatives from the Bureau of Land Management; Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks; U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; Corps of Engineers; and Bureau of Reclamation standing by.”
There will be a series of open houses along the HiLine this fall intended to provide a one-stop-shopping opportunity for all of your hunting and other outdoor recreation questions. Agency representatives can provide information about recreating on public lands and private lands that are enrolled in Fish, Wildlife and Parks’ Block Management Program.
The first open house will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 8, at the BLM Glasgow Field Office located one block off Highway 2 on the east end of Glasgow at 5 Lasar Drive. Subsequent information sessions will be held in Malta on October 15 and in Havre on October 19. More details on the Malta and Havre open houses will be provided at a later date.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land – the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM’s multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
