Colorado’s Highline Lake State Park and Racing Underground Present the Desert’s Edge Triathlon

Come to Highline Lake State Park and witness the ultimate test of human endurance! The Desert’s Edge Triathlon offers both an Olympic distance race and a sprint triathlon race. The Olympic distance race will consist of a 1,500-meter swim, a forty kilometer bike ride on nearby paved county roads, and ten kilometer run around the lake on dirt trails. The sprint distances will be half the distances of the Olympic race (750 meters, 21 kilometers, and 5 kilometers).

The event will begin Sunday, Oct. 7 when the first wave of swimmers enters the water at 8 a.m. County roads involved with the race will be open to light traffic, so we urge those coming to the area to please heed warning signs and yield to cyclists. The race will end when the last Olympic run finisher crosses the line, estimated to be in the early afternoon at approximately 1 p.m. Set-up for the event will begin on Saturday primarily in the day use area where the start and finish lines will be located. The campground has been set aside for participants on both Friday, Oct. 5 and Saturday, Oct. 6. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy this athletic spectacle. The price for entrance is the normal park admission of $7 per vehicle per day or presentation of an annual Colorado State Parks Pass.
Highline Lake State Park is the only reservoir in the Grand Valley that offers power boating, water-skiing and jet-skiing opportunities. Located just west of Grand Junction, the park is popular for fishing and swimming as well. Many visitors also use Highline State Park as a camping base for mountain biking or river rafting. Large shade trees and turf grass areas offer a pleasant place to rest after a hard day of playing or to cool off from summer heat.
