Manitoba’s Provincial Hunting Day is Sept. 22

Manitoba Wildlife Federation (MWF) President, Reid Woods is pleased to announce the 4th annual Provincial Hunting Day celebration takes place at Oak Hammock Marsh, Saturday, September 22, 2012, from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. The event features Winnipeg Blue Bomber stars Buck Pierce and Glenn January and a variety of fun and exciting activities for the whole family, including:
- Archery, Air Rifle & Atlatl range
- Retriever & Pointer dogs in action
- Traditional Métis music
- Hunting seminars & exhibition tent
- Complimentary lunch, supplied by Danny’s Whole Hog, for the first 500 people
- HunterCourse.com vouchers for the first 50 youth (12-16 yrs. of age) – a $55 value
Woods says it is important Manitobans understand the crucial role hunters play in wildlife management. “Hunting is part of our history and natural heritage and Provincial Hunting Day reminds us to promote and preserve this rich tradition,” said Woods. “Hunters and outdoor enthusiasts are at the forefront of wildlife management. The biggest supporters of habitat conservation programs are hunters and anglers,” added Woods.
In 2009, the Province of Manitoba joined Alberta and all 50 U.S. states in proclaiming the fourth Saturday in September as Provincial Hunting Day to recognise the role hunting plays in wildlife management and conservation. Hunting makes a significant contribution to the Manitoba economy generating over $4 million in revenue in licenses alone, with over 85,000 hunting licences sold annually.
The Provincial Hunting Day celebration is organized by the Manitoba Wildlife Federation in conjunction with: Ducks Unlimited; Manitoba Conservation; Manitoba Lodge and Outfitters Association; Manitoba Métis Federation; and Travel Manitoba. The MWF delivers and supports a variety of programs for members and youth including: Manitoba Hunter Education; Shooting skills events; Junior rifle and junior shotgun programs; Mentored hunting opportunities; Becoming an Outdoors Women program; Winnipeg Fish Festival; and the Recreational Fishing League.
The Hunter Education program is operated by the Manitoba Wildlife Federation and is now available online at www.huntercourse.com. As of January 1, 2012, all Manitoba hunters are required to carry proof of Hunter Education when hunting.
Youth are encouraged to pair up with a licensed adult hunter using one of the special low-cost licences available. Youth hunters between the ages of 12 and 17, who have successfully completed the Manitoba Hunter Education course, or a similar course from another province, are eligible to participate using shared or separate bag limits in mentored hunting.
Established in 1944, the Manitoba Wildlife Federation is the province’s oldest and largest conservation organization boasting over 14,000 members in 110 affiliate groups.
