Arizona: Learn about the Outdoors from the Comfort of Your Own Home

The Arizona Game and Fish Department is hosting a series of online workshops or webinars designed to provide information and lessons about unique wildlife issues in Arizona. These short (usually 1-1.5 hour) workshops are convenient because you can participate in them from the comfort of your home or classroom. All you need is a computer with an Internet connection and audio capabilities.
Currently, there are THREE online webinars scheduled for the Fall semester, including two that are taking place in the next two weeks! Information about each specific workshop is included below. America’s Wildlife: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow – THIS THURSDAY, September 20, 2012
The struggle to preserve America’s wildlife is an amazing tale of national and natural history. It is a story of what we can accomplish when we work together toward a common goal. Learn how to bring this story into your high school science or social studies classroom as we explore a free educational unit developed by the Arizona Game and Fish Department. This award-winning, standards-based collection of engaging lessons complete with informative multimedia resources has become extremely popular. Teachers from across the country have received training and are implementing the lessons in their classroom. It is a great way to integrate disciplines while you share the story of wildlife conservation through the context of American history.

Conservation Giants: Rachel Carson – Thursday, September 27, 2012
Fifty years ago, a book was published that would change the way we view the environment and would inspire generations into action. This webinar, hosted by the Arizona Game and Fish Department, will discuss the impact of this monumental book, A Silent Spring, and explore the life of its author Rachel Carson. At the end of the session, you will have a better understanding of the role this book has played in conservation both worldwide and right here in Arizona. You will also have some great ideas for bringing the achievements of this remarkable scientist into your classroom. This webinar is the first in a series that will look at some of the people who have had the greatest impact on wildlife conservation throughout American history.

GIS in Education: Exploring AZGFD Tools – Wednesday, November 14, 2012
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has revolutionized the world as we know it. Most people interact with GIS on a regular basis but may have no idea. Lots of careers are available in the field of GIS, yet very few schools prepare students to enter these fields. In this webinar, sponsored by the Arizona Game and Fish Department, participants will be introduced to GIS and some of the free tools available from the Department to integrate this technology into your classroom ecology instruction.
