Montana FWP Magazine Wins National Awards

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks’ bi-monthly magazine, Montana Outdoors, recently took first place in the magazine category at the 2012 awards competition of the National Association of Government Communicators.

Montana Outdoors, also won first place in the article category for “Fishing for Serenity,” about how fly-fishing can help war veterans struggling with PTSD; and second place for “The Bighorn’s Rocky Recovery,” the story of wild sheep restoration in Montana. Both stories were written by Montana Outdoors editor Tom Dickson.

NAGC members include editors and press officers with the Department of Defense, National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and other federal, state, city and county agencies across the United States.

In the recent 2012 Association for Conservation Information awards competition, Montana Outdoors took top honors in the wildlife article category with Dickson’s “Coveting the Crown,” an inquiry into hunters’ desire to pursue large-antlered deer and elk, and won first place in the fisheries article category with “Fishing for Serenity.”

The ACI is a nonprofit organization of communicators working for state, federal, Canadian and private conservation agencies and organizations.

Montana Outdoors also placed second in the ACI competition’s overall magazine category. The FWP publication has won first or second place in the organization’s magazine category for seven of the past eight years.
