Wisconsin DNR Thanks Public for Deer Survey

Thanks to all who helped with the Operation Deer Watch Survey which ended Sunday. Your participation was greatly appreciated by the Department of Natural Resources. However, please note, the DNR will take any additional reports from wildlife watchers until October 15.
Two months ago, the DNR asked for the public’s help in estimating the reproductive status of the deer herd. Citizens were asked for their observations of does, fawns and bucks. While the survey period is over, observations from wildlife watchers still are welcomed. Observations can be reported by going to the Wisconsin DNR homepage and keyword search deer.

Here are the Operation Deer Watch Survey totals
The response to the DNR’s call for citizen reports for Operation Deer Watch was impressive. More than 1,371 observations were reported by 576 individuals. Observers reported 789 bucks, 512 unknowns, 1,512 does without fawns, 313 fawns without does, 546 does with one fawn, 397 does with two fawns and 55 does with three fawns. Observations were received from 112 of 139 state deer management units. Data from the survey will be combined with similar data collected from DNR personnel. These data, along with harvest and age information, will be used in estimating deer densities in most of the state’s deer management units at the end of the hunting season.
