Public Meetings for Pronghorn Antelope and Elk Hunt Recommendations Slated for Oct. 18 in Four Arizona Locations

The Arizona Game and Fish Department will host four public forums to meet with constituents about developing the 2013 hunt recommendations for pronghorn, elk, and population management hunts.

The meetings will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18, at these Game and Fish regional offices:

  • Pinetop regional office, 2878 E. White Mountain Blvd.
  • Flagstaff regional office, 3500 S. Lake Mary Road.
  • Kingman regional office, 5325 N. Stockton Hill Road.
  • Mesa regional office, 7200 E. University Drive.

Constituents who are interested in pronghorn and elk management will have the opportunity to discuss management direction.

“These meetings are a great way for sportsmen and other members of the public to stay informed and provide input into development of the hunt recommendations,” said Big Game Management Supervisor Amber Munig. “We won’t be proposing permit numbers at this point, but we will discuss generally where permit numbers might be headed based on survey data, harvest rates, and the hunt guidelines.”

Following the public forums, the proposed hunt recommendations will be posted by Nov. 26 on the department’s website at www.azgfd.gov/huntguidelines. The proposed hunt recommendations will also be available for public review during open houses at the department’s six regional offices on the following dates from 3 to 5 p.m.:

  • Tucson regional office on Nov. 30 at 555 N. Greasewood Road
  • Pinetop regional office on Dec. 4 at 2878 E. White Mountain Blvd.
  • Mesa regional office on Dec. 4 at 7200 E. University Drive
  • Flagstaff regional office on Dec. 5 at 3500 S. Lake Marry Road
  • Kingman regional office on Dec. 5 at 5325 N. Stockton Hill Road
  • Yuma regional office on Dec. 5 at 9140 E. 28th St.

No formal presentations will be made during the open houses. However, a knowledgeable staff person will be available to discuss regional hunt recommendations.

Each year, the department makes recommendations to the commission regarding the management of game species for the annual pronghorn and elk regulations, which establish the seasons, dates, bag limits, open areas, and hunt permit-tag allocations based on the framework of the hunt guidelines set by the commission every two years. These recommendations are in accordance with the recently revised hunt guideline package.

The final fall hunt recommendations will be presented to the Arizona Game and Fish Commission for consideration during its Saturday, Dec. 8 meeting in Phoenix at the Game and Fish headquarters at 5000 W. Carefree Highway, Phoenix (1.5 miles west of I-17). The agenda will be posted at www.azgfd.gov/commission under commission agenda.
