The Outdoor Campus-West Hosts Ribbon Cutting for Firewise Demonstration Garden in South Dakota

South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks has partnered with the Rapid City Fire Department and the Great Plains Fire Safe Council to install a demonstration garden on The Outdoor Campus West grounds. The garden, designed by a landscape architect, models vegetation choices and placement that reduce the likelihood of a nearby wildland fire spreading to the home.

The ribbon cutting ceremony will begin at 9:00 A.M. on Friday, October 19, 2012. The gardens are west of the main building on The Outdoor Campus West, 4130 Adventure Trail, Rapid City.

“The Outdoor Campus West is an ideal spot for the firewise landscape garden because the campus is free and encourages people to be outside and enjoy our beautiful outdoors,” said Lieutenant Tim Weaver of the Rapid City Fire Department. “We want people to see that their own property can be both beautiful and safe from wildland fire.”

Several businesses and volunteers provided materials and labor to finish the project.
The Outdoor Campus-West is located at 4130 Adventure Trail and is open to the public seven days a week with no admission fee.
