SOTG Fall Semester a Success

Despite the freezing rain, wind, and uncharacteristically early snowfall, Students of the Gun soldiered on for the SOTG Fall Semester training held in Jackson, Ohio October 29 to November 2nd.  Participants took part in the Beyond the BandAid, Pistol 101, and Ballistic Problem Solving courses.

“You are far more likely to need your medical kit than your gun” said Paul Markel, host of SOTG and lead instructor, “…yet, many folks will carry a firearm but never consider what it take to render life-saving first aid.”   During the Beyond the BandAid course students were taught how to recognize and stop-gap life-threatening injuries.   Massive bleeding from the limbs, a blocked airway, and tension pneumothrorax are all injuries that can kill a person before the ambulance arrives.  Beyond the BandAid teaches stop-gap measures that can keep a patient alive long enough to reach the trauma center.

Pistol 101 and Ballistic Problem Solving are shooting programs that naturally complement each other.  During Pistol 101 shooters work on the fundamentals of gun handling and marksmanship.  Those fundamentals provide the foundation for the Ballistic Problem Solving course.

Ballistic Problem Solving is also referred to as thinking with a gun in your hand.  Anytime you have a firearm in your hands you must be thinking.  If you are forced to defend your life with a gun you must make the correct decisions very quickly.  We can’t simply launch bullets hoping the problem with solve itself, we must think and problem-solve all while employing a firearm effectively.  The BPS course puts students through numerous live-fire exercises where they must first think and make a decision before pressing the trigger.
