One of the fastest ducks that flies is the teal. Blue-winged teal, green-winged teal and cinnamon teal all come down the Mississippi Flyway and hold at the three national waterfowl refuges at Reelfoot Lake near Tiptonville, Tennessee. Like the other ducks that move down the flyway, the teal fly in and out of these refuges and create exciting and productive duck hunting for the watermen who come here every season to take them. But the teal present a challenge for both the caller and the shooter, because hunters have to use a different type of calling to talk to teal. They also have to be quick on the gun and give these little spitfires plenty of lead, since they’re some of the fastest ducks that fly. Billy Blakely, chief guide at Blue Bank Resort (www.bluebankresort.com) on Reelfoot Lake, near Tiptonville, Tennessee, will teach us how to talk teal.
