Colorado’s Roxborough State Park Offers Naturalist Guided Activities in December

Come join the fun, learn about nature and watch Roxborough State Park change with the season. Park naturalists will lead you on a journey of discovery through our guided hikes and activities. Programs are free, however, please remember that all vehicles entering the park must purchase a $7 daily pass or display a valid annual pass. Please note most programs require reservations.   • 12/8/2012: 10 Percent Discount Day!: Come support the Park and Friends of Roxborough while you take care of the nature lovers on your holiday list. Stop by the visitor center bookstore and take 10 percent off all books, t-shirts, maps, hats, sweatshirts and more! Friends will host their annual public meeting at 9:30, recapping 2012 and giving projections for 2013. At 10:30, we will have an author potpourri and book signing. Autographed copies are also 10 percent off.

  • 12/11/2012: Kids Hour: Get your children involved in nature! Bring your kids to the park for fun activities, stories, and/or short nature hikes. Ages: five and younger accompanied by an adult. Please call for information and to register. Reservations required 24 hours prior. Call 303-973-3959.

  • 12/12/2012: Guided Bird Walk: Grab your bird book and binoculars and join naturalists Paul and Phoebe Thayer for bird watching adventures. These hikes are for all ability levels. Dress for changing weather conditions. Registration required. Call 303-973-3959.

  • 12/15/2012: Old Fashioned Holiday Celebration: Enjoy a winter stroll down the Fountain Valley trail, and then warm up with hot cocoa, warm cider, and holiday treats at the historic Persse Place.

  • 12/16/2012: Rox Talk: Sit with naturalist Mary Taylor near the fireplace for informal conversation about what rocks tell us about their origins and the environments in which they were formed.

  • 12/22/2012: Every Hike is a GREAT One at Rox Park!: Join naturalist Deb Wright for a hike on South Rim trail. See beautiful views of Roxborough’s landscape from the summit. This is a moderate 3-mile round trip hike and will lift you physically, mentally and spiritually. Bring water and a snack. Dress for all weather conditions. Registration required. Call 303-973-3959.

  • 12/29/2012: Holiday Bird Count: Bird lovers unite! All ability levels welcome. Join us for the 2012 annual Douglas County bird count and potluck chili dinner. Teams spend the day counting birds and at the end of the day converge at the Roxborough Visitor Center for a potluck chili dinner. Registration is required before Dec. 26; call 303-973-3959. There is a $2 “chili charge.” Chili and drinks are provided. Please bring a side dish to share.
