The February 2013 issue of GUNS Magazine highlights Kimber’s recent decision to chamber the .280 Ackley Improved cartridge in the popular lightweight Model 84L bolt-action rifle — offering hunters a matchless combination of elegance and power. According to GUNS contributing editor Holt Bodinson, this adaptable rifle would be an exceptional addition to any arsenal.
“If you’ve been searching for an all-around caliber and rifle combination that’s more versatile and powerful than the .270 Win, without the boom and fuss of a belted Magnum, the .280 Ackley Improved might prove to be ideal,” asserts Bodinson. “It’s not magic. It’s simply the marriage of outstanding ballistic performance with exceptionally fine design.”
In “Double Duty” GUNS contributing editor John Taffin examines Rock Island Armory’s high-capacity 1911-A2 .22 TCM and 9mm convertible. Capable of holding 18 rounds, this 1911 packs a significant punch in both the .22 TCM and 9mm cartridge options — much to Taffin’s delight.
“Would you believe a 40-grain bullet at 2,050 fps from a 5″ barrel? There certainly must be a better adjective than ‘sizzling’ to hang on this but I can’t think of one,” writes Taffin. “What we have is a high-velocity varmint pistol, which can easily be changed into a high-capacity self-defense sidearm.”
This issue of GUNS also covers the return of the “Little Big .50” Winchester 1876 rifle, Browning’s redesigned Model 725, the first national match for the iconic blunderbuss and a debate on whether reticles or turrets are better equipped for sighting in scopes.
