South Dakota Hunters Near Mountain Lion Harvest Limit

   02.24.12

South Dakota hunters have taken 11 mountain lions since Monday, and are now near the harvest limit for the 2012 season.

Mountain lion number 60 was taken on Thursday. The harvest limit for the season is 70. In addition, there is a sub-limit of 50 female mountain lions and so far 37 have been taken.

“It is very important for hunters to pay close attention to updated reports on the lion take as we approach the harvest limit,” Game, Fish and Parks Chief of Terrestrial Services Tom Kirschenmann said. “Conditions in the Black Hills are very good for hunting right now, and quite a few mountain lion hunters are taking advantage of that. It is not unreasonable to expect hunters to reach the harvest limit soon if these conditions persist.”

Updates on mountain lion harvest are posted to the GFP website at http://www.gfp.sd.gov/hunting/big-game/mountain-lion-season-harvest-status.aspx
