Vermont’s Green Mountain Conservation Camp Kehoe Hosts Winter Survival Event

The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department will host a winter survival demonstration at Green Mountain Conservation Camp (GMCC) Kehoe in Castleton, VT this Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – noon.
Free and open to the public, the event will include a brief indoor talk followed by a hands-on portion outdoors. The outdoor portion will feature Warden Rob Sterling demonstrating the winter searching skills of his K9 assistant, a labrador retriever named Rufus. The traditional art of building a Quincy, or a snow house similar to an igloo, will also be covered during the event, weather permitting.
This is the first in a series of events hosted at GMCC Kehoe facility in 2013. The events take place once a month and include activities such as wildlife tracking, gardening for wildlife, and the annual Halloween festival and Jack-o’-lantern hike.
“The winter survival program is going to be a great way to start off the new 2013 event series at GMCC Kehoe,” said Alison Thomas, education director for Vermont Fish & Wildlife. “Participants will hear about and participate in activities focused on ways to be safe and have fun in Vermont’s harsh winter conditions,”

“Be sure to dress in layers,” added Thomas. “We’ll be standing still while Rufus does his demonstrations, but working on the quincy hut can be more vigorous and you might want to shed some clothes.”
