Outdoor Retailer Recommits as Institute Associate for 2013 Sundance Film Festival

Show-organized ‘Innovation Gallery’ relocated to the heart of  film festival activity in Park City, Utah

Outdoor Retailer recently announced it will continue its year-round support of Sundance Institute, including its annual Sundance Film Festival, as an Institute Associate in 2013. In addition to providing financial support, the outdoor industry trade show organizer will operate the “Innovation Gallery by Outdoor Retailer” event space in the Galleria Mall on Historic Main Street in Park City, Utah, a brand new venue for the event.

In addition to the many shared interests, values and activities between attendees of the Sundance Film Festival and Outdoor Retailer, this year the two events run with some concurrent dates (Outdoor Retailer: Jan. 23-26 and Sundance Film Festival: Jan. 17-27). The two events also share Salt Lake City as a host city for the trade show and some of the film festival’s events and screenings.

“While the tradeshow is closed to the public, the ‘Innovation Gallery’ is a tangible way we can connect the dots between the outdoor industry, and top tier filmmakers and actors who often need seriously functional equipment on location,” said Kenji Haroutunian, vice president at Nielsen Expositions and OR show director. “With the expanding field of ‘outdoor industry stories on film,’ we believe our collaboration with Sundance Institute will create additional opportunities for brands, athletes and advocates to get involved in the independent film community. We also anticipate that our program will drive attention and business to specialty retailers within an influential group of filmmaking pros.”

The “Innovation Gallery by Outdoor Retailer” space will be designed with the involvement of several leading outdoor brands to help share the emerging technologies and history of the outdoor industry.

This year’s participants include brands like Adidas Outdoor, Stella Artois, Bota Box, Patron, High West Distillery, and PepsiCo brands. The space will be open for browsing by the Festival’s more than 45,000 attendees during the 10 days of the Festival, Jan. 17-27, and will also be used as a premiere party venue for films including “The Square, “The Crash Reel,” “When I Walk,” “American Promise,” Asian Filmmakers Society, and a press junket for actor James Franco.

Following a successful event in 2012, Liz Ferrin Productions will again curate the Innovation Gallery event space, bringing together artists, brands and properties to create unique partnerships and compelling content.

OR also encourages all attendees to explore the Festival line-up and make plans to view one of the several films that speak to outdoor adventure and promote the protection of endangered wild lands. As part of the Festival’s use of multi-city venues, attendees can view many films in Salt Lake City, including “The Crash Reel,” a film highlighting the epic rivalry between Kevin Pearce and Shaun White, a life-changing crash and a moving comeback story.
