$30,000 in College Scholarships Available to Students
The National Rifle Association invites high school sophomores and juniors across the nation to apply for the Youth Education Summit, an all expenses-paid weeklong educational experience in Washington, DC from June 24-30, 2013. Applications must be received by February 18, 2013.
The Youth Education Summit (Y.E.S.) encourages young adults to become active and knowledgeable citizens by learning about the Constitution and Bill of Rights, the federal government and the importance of being active in civic affairs. Activities on the agenda include meeting with members of Congress, hearing from guest speakers at NRA Headquarters, participating in competitive debates, touring historic sites and monuments in the DC Metro area and more.
“Before attending Y.E.S., I did not know much about what the NRA stands for or the impact it makes in our communities,” said 2012 participant Bethany Janzen of Happy Valley, Oregon. “Y.E.S. showed me how the NRA encourages firearm safety, shooting sport participation, and most importantly, fights to protect our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.”
Attendees also have the chance to compete for $15,000 in college scholarships. Judged on speeches and debates held during the summit, these scholarships are awarded at the conclusion the program. Once they arrive back home, students may apply for an additional $15,000 in scholarships available to those who share their experience with their communities. Since the program’s inception in 1996, more than $385,000 in scholarships has been awarded.
Entry into the program requires submission of a completed application form, a high school transcript, a three-page essay on the Second Amendment, a one-page personal statement, and three letters of recommendation. Those interested must their application post-marked no later than February 18, 2013.
