Minnesota Eagle Cam Offers Reality TV at its Best

   02.29.12

Reality TV has nothing on Mother Nature. Just ask Minnesota Bound’s Ron Schara. The local television show host tested the waters a few years ago with the “Loon Cam”, and had a half a million viewers for a 30-day period. Mr. Schara figured if a Loon Cam could be so interesting why not try the Nation’s bird?

“The addition of an Eagle cam is a natural fit for our long running loon cam,” said Ron Schara, host of Minnesota Bound, “Having an invisible eye on an Eagle nest iseducational on its own as we discovered after watching loon nesting. And it fits what Minnesota Bound is all about. ”

Not that the Eagle Cam came without its share of surprises. Last year, a pair of owls decided to “play house” in the Eagles nest instead. And the ever-changing weather of Mother Nature sometimes plays havoc with the camera mount.

The Minnesota Bound Eagle nest is located in central Minnesota, USA, less than 30 yards from flowing waters of the Crow River. This nest is relatively young by Bald Eagle terms and is roughly 3 x 3 feet, made out of twigs, brush and other bird friendlybedding.

Mark Wegscheid, Broadband MN., helped put up the Eagle Cam and is excited about this year’s camera view. “We have a new remote monitoring system, as well as an improved solar system and wireless connectivity to the network,” explained Wegscheid, “We know there will be challenges, but I guess that’s part of the thrill! It’s a wonderful glimpse into the life of these wonderful creatures.”
