Wal-Mart Limits Customers to Three Ammo Boxes a Day

A boom in sales for firearms and ammunition is causing supply issues for the retail giant Wal-Mart. According to CNN.com, the nation’s largest retailer announced that customers will be allowed to purchase three boxes of ammunition per day as of Thursday, January 31. This will be in effect for all ammo types, whether it be a box of .22LR or buckshot shells.
“Right now we’re monitoring supply issues daily, since supply is limited at this time,” said Wal-Mart spokeswoman Ashley Hardie. “We’re trying to take care of as many customers as possible and we’re working with suppliers to put products back on shelves.”
The rise in sales began late last year from concern over potential gun control legislation. Recent proposals by President Obama and lawmakers like Senator Dianne Feinstein have attributed to the continued increase. Many retailers are struggling to keep up with demand and individual Wal-Mart shopping centers have been habitually sold out of ammo. In calls to three Michigan Wal-Marts, Outdoor Hub reporters found that none of them currently have ammunition in stock.
“I’ve heard about the corporate decision,” said one employee. “It doesn’t affect us much here because we’ve been out [of ammo] for a while.”
The purchase limit extends to every Wal-Mart nationwide and officials have no word on when the shortage will end.
“Once the issue resolved, we’ll address [the] purchase limit,” Hardie said.
