Mote’s Manatees Predict Super Bowl Champion Correctly for Sixth Straight Year
OutdoorHub Reporters 02.04.13
Last Friday Mote Aquarium’s Manatees Hugh and Buffet both chose the Baltimore Ravens to win Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans, and they were right–the Ravens defeated the 49ers 34-31 despite being four-point underdogs going into the game.
Hugh and Buffet have been predicting the Super Bowl champions for the last six years. Buffet is a perfect six for six in her predictions; Hugh has only been correct four of the last six years. The two manatees reside at the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Florida, and are the world’s most highly trained Manatees.
Hugh and Buffet’s training has no part in which team they pick to win–according to Mote Scientists, the two manatees “made these decisions all on their own.”

Mote scientists work with Hugh and Buffet to learn more about how well manatees hear, how sensitive the hairs on their snouts are, and how well they are able to see. The scientists hope research with Hugh and Buffet will enable them to learn more about manatees in the wild, and help monitor the endangered manatee population.
Hugh and Buffet, along with the rest of the Mote Aquarium’s aquatic wildlife, can be visited between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. seven days a week, 365 days a year (including all holidays).
