Arkansas State Fish and Duck Contests Highlight Young Artists

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will once again administer the Federal Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest and the Wildlife Forever State Fish Art Contest for Arkansas. These contests use art to catch the imagination of students and foster a discovery of the natural world by increasing awareness of, and respect for, our natural resources.
The contests serve as an outreach initiative and showcase for youth in the arts, according to Junior Duck Stamp Contest Coordinator Sarah Baxter. “It brings conservation into the classroom to help students gain a better understanding of native wildlife identification, behavior, habitat needs and an interest in good stewardship of our environment,” she explained. Both programs have cross-curricular program activities and lesson plans.
Dawn Cook, the State Fish Art Coordinator, says the AGFC and Wildlife Forever have joined together to promote conservation awareness through the art contest. “It catches the imagination of young artists and encourages them to create an illustration of their chosen state fish,” Cook said.
Entry forms for the Junior Duck Stamp Program and Art Contest are available at: www.fws.gov/juniorduck. For more information on the State Fish Art Contest, go to: www.statefishart.com. The deadline for Junior Duck Stamp Art entries is March 15 and the deadline for State Fish Art is March 31.
