Northern Anglers Lead the Field on Lake Washington
This past Saturday February 16th CrappieUSA held a qualifying event on Lake Washington near Greenville, Mississippi. Anglers from 11 different states were competing for not only cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic. Due to the strong winds and cold temperatures several teams headed home and elected not to fish the event. This year’s classic will be held October 23-26, 2013 on Kentucky Lake at Paris, Tennessee.
Semi-Pro Division Results
Taking first place was the team of Steve White of Monticello, Arkansas and David White of White Hall, Arkansas with a total weight of 14.91 pounds earning $1,000.00. Steve and David also earned an additional $40.00 for second biggest fish of the event. Steve and David were fishing the north end of the lake using pink jigs in 1 1/2 feet of water to catch over 30 fish for the day including over 10 fish exceeding 2 pounds.
Second place went to the team of Steve Ferguson of Puryear, Tennessee and Joey Briggs of Dexter, Kentucky with a weight of 13.04 pounds and earning $400.00. Steve and Joey were spider rigging in 5-7 feet of water using purple/chartreuse Umbrella size Southern Pro jigs on B’n’M Poles to catch 9 fish for the day.
In third place was the Dyersburg, Tennessee team of Brian Ramm and Jeff Heathcott weighing in 12.64 pounds of crappie to earn $200.00. Brian and Jeff were spider rigging the south end of the lake using live bait to catch 15-16 crappie along with several catfish in the process.
Joe and Jeanette Carter of Gilbert, South Carolina took the Ranger Cup Award in the Semi-Pro Division to earn $250.00. Joe and Jeanette were long line trolling on the north end of the lake in 5-8 feet of water using a variety of colored baits.
Amateur Division Results
First place in the amateur division went to the Murray, Kentucky team of Mason Milby and Ashley Adams weighing in 13.87 pounds to earn $1,000.00. Mason and Ashley were spider rigging the new Southern Pro, Pro Staff series umbrella jigs in firecracker and neon smoke colors. The team was also received an additional $150.00 in Driftmaster Product for using all Driftmaster equipment during the event.
Second place went to Roger Milby of Auburn, Alabama and Brandon Rogers of Murray, Kentucky with a weight of 13.48 pounds and earning $400.00. Roger and Brandon were spider rigging the north end of the lake using Southern Pro orange /chartreuse umbrella jigs in 6 feet of water to catch 12-15 fish for the day, including a 2.64 pound crappie which earned them an additional $100.00 for big fish of the event.
Taking third place was the Murray, Kentucky team of Scott Waldrop and Adrian Hale with a weight of 12.06 pounds and earning $200.00. Scott and Adrian also earned an additional $125.00 for winning the Ranger Cup award in the Amateur Division. Scott and Adrian were spider rigging the north end of the lake using electric chicken colored jigs in 6-8 feet of water. The team caught a total of 8 fish for the day with young Adrian catching 6 of those 8 fish. Adrian was the “2012 Youth Angler of the Year.

Crappie USA Free Kids Fishing Rodeo
In conjunction with the tournament CrappieUSAheld their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with 68 local children attending the event and catching over 100 catfish on the courtesy docks at Bait and Thangs Bait Shop on Lake Washington. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$1,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic.
CrappieUSAand our anglers have contributed nearly $316,000.00 to the “Crappie Kids” Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Crappie USA “Kids Fishing Rodeos”.

Weather- Winds were 10-20 MPH out of the north and cold all day with temperatures in the high 30’s to low 40’s with some very stubborn fish due to the cold snap.
