2013 ACUI Lower Midwest Conference Championships Results

The Association of College Unions International (ACUI) Lower Midwest Conference Championships took place this past weekend, Feb 15–17, at the San Antonio Gun Club in San Antonio, Texas. Forty-three students from five colleges and universities across Texas participated in Sporting Clays, American Skeet and American Trap during the three-day event.
ACUI awarded endowment money for team High Overall ($5000), Runner up ($3000) and Third place ($2000). Each participating team also received $5000 in endowment money, and the host teams from Texas A&M University and Trinity University each received $1250 in endowment money and $1250 in operating funds. In total ACUI gave out $40,000 in endowment and operating funds. The endowment money is deposited into the team’s Scholastic Shooting Trust account at the MidwayUSA Foundation.
Van Boerner, coach of the Trinity University Shooting Team had this to say about the event: “First, let me say how much I appreciated all your efforts in bringing the Lower Mid-West Divisional Matches to the San Antonio Gun Club and allowing Trinity University to co-host the event. I had so many comments about how well the shoot was run and it was evident that you [Russ Arnold] and Jake Dawes put a lot of time in planning and preparing for the shoot. I thought the format was perfect for the event. It provided flexibility to those shooters with conflicts and it achieved the objective without creating back-ups or delays. The competitive level was perfect and our shooters gained some valuable experience in our preparation for Nationals.”
In women’s Sporting Clays, Jenni Clark from Trinity University won first place with a score of 90. Drucilla Meier, Schreiner University, took second with a score of 76. Lisette Oler from the University of Texas–Austin ended the first day of shooting with a third place finish; shooting a 63.
For the men, Tyler Martin from Texas A&M University took first place in Sporting Clays with a score of 88. Second place went to Neal Hodges, of Schreiner University, with a score of 87. William Berry from the University of Texas–Austin, rounded out the top 3 with a score of 85.
Saturday was an exciting day of skeet shooting for both men and women. For the men, John Lendermen of Texas A&M University scored a perfect 100. Kyle Barringer of Texas A&M University and Chris Ricks from the University of Texas–Austin both scored a 99. In the finals shoot-off Barringer took second place scoring an additional 2 points to Ricks’ third place finishing 1 in the finals.
The women’s competition saw an exciting shoot-off for first place. Clark, Trinity University, scored a 99+5 to take first, while Bailey Glenewinkel from Texas A&M University placed second with a score of 99+4. Brandy Drozd from Texas A&M University took third with a score of 97.
American Trap on Sunday proved to be just as exciting as Skeet the day before. Lendermen, Texas A&M University, had another great day, scoring a 99. His teammate, Barringer, scored a 98, as did Dustin English from Schreiner University. In the shoot-offs that followed, English took second place with a total score of 98+25 and Barringer took third with a score of 98+22.
Clark, Trinity University, concluded her great weekend of shooting by scoring a near perfect 99. The women also had to shoot-off for second place; Oler, University of Texas–Austin, and Drozd, Texas A&M University, both scoring a 91. One round of shoot-offs wasn’t enough to decide the placement as each woman scored at 24 in the first round of shoot-offs. In the final round of shoot-offs, Drozd scored a 15 to take second place, and Oler scored a 14 to put her in third.
In the Team HOA competition, Texas A&M University completed their weekend with a score of 1339. The team Runner up award went home with the University of Texas–Austin, who scored a combined 1315. Trinity University took third place with a score of 1236.
Upcoming ACUI Shotgun Bowl Series events include the East Coast International Championships, March 8–10 at Ft Benning, Ga. and the West Conference Championships, March 15–17 at the Tucson Trap and Skeet in Tucson, Ariz.
