Vintage and Classic Firearms Take Center Stage in GUNS Magazine Surplus Special Edition

The GUNS Surplus Summer/Fall 2013 Special Edition highlights the very best the burgeoning surplus market has to offer, while keeping an eye on present developments to make a day of plinking or target shooting even more enjoyable with favorite vintage firearms.

“This GUNS Surplus Special Edition delivers everything you need to know about what’s hot in the surplus, classic and vintage scene,” says Publisher Roy Huntington. “Writers like Holt Bodinson, John Taffin and Mike Venturino steer readers through the maze of what’s good and what’s not.”

As the world’s first assault rifle, the full-auto STG-44 changed the landscape of World War II and is lauded by vintage arms enthusiasts — but is exceedingly rare and expensive to shoot. American Tactical Imports has solved that quandary by importing a semi-auto reproduction of the original, chambered in .22LR. To Contributing Editor Mike Venturino, this represents a fun addition to any surplus cache.

“In outward conformation, the new .22 STG-44 is nigh-on identical to my original,” writes Venturino. “The new .22LR facsimile of the much-revered ‘world’s first assault rifle’ isn’t cheap for a rimfire that obviously is more a plinker than any sort of ‘serious’ rifle. Still, it’s a fun shooter with a very historical connection to the past.”

Around 1880, settlers of the Old West faced an enduring predicament: with limited options of repeating rifles and ammunition, which one would be best for protection and provision? Contributing Editors John Taffin and Jeff John take opposing viewpoints on whether the lever-action 1876 Winchester Centennial .45-70 or the bolt-action 1879 Hotchkiss .45-70 would be best suited for the trek out West. Readers will enjoy their side-by-side analysis and compelling conclusions.

More than 30 vintage guns are covered in this GUNS Magazine Special Edition including: the S&W Model 1917 .45 ACP, a collection of World War II European Sniper Rifles, the Model 1910 and 1911 from U.S. Firearms Mfg., Italian shoulder arms of World War I, the 1905 Colt .45 ACP and the P-14/M1917 Enfield.
