Record Number of Students Compete in Kentucky School Archery State Championship
The Trigg County Arrowcats swept the team competition at the 2013 National Archery in the Schools (NASP) Kentucky state championship held March 18-19 at Louisville’s International Convention Center.
“We changed our coaching philosophy and the kids have really responded both academically and athletically,” said Tom Patterson, coach of Trigg County’s high school team. “We’re really pleased, and we have a good group of people helping us.”
“A record number of student archers – a total of 4,093 – participated in the tournament,” said Patrick O’Connell, state NASP coordinator. “And there’s still room to bring more schools into the program here in Kentucky.”
Elementary, middle and high school students competed for individual and team awards. It was the 12th state tournament held in Kentucky since the program began in 2001.
Archery is now a Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) sport activity so the top five high school boys and girls and top 3 teams received KHSAA state championship awards. “This is the first year we’ve sanctioned archery as a sport activity,” said Mike Barren, KHSAA assistant commissioner. “We didn’t want these kids to miss out on a part of the school community.”
After practice rounds, each competitor shot 15 arrows from 10 meters and 15 arrows from 15 meters, for a total possible score of 300 points. Competitors shot additional rounds to break any ties.
The top finishers in the team and individual standings qualify for the 2013 NASP Nationals, to be held in Louisville May 10-11.

In the overall individual competition, Taylor Baker of Stuart Pepper Middle School won the girl’s division. Jericho Vannoy of Hopkins County Central High School won the boy’s division.
In the overall team competition, Trigg County High School won the high school division, followed by Meade County High School then Henderson County High School
In the middle school division, Trigg County Middle School captured first place, followed by Anderson County Middle School then Caudill Middle School.
In the elementary school division, Trigg County Intermediate School placed first, followed by White Hall Elementary then Holy Name Elementary.
Awards were also presented just to Kentucky High School Athletic Association teams. Jerricho Vonnoy of Hopkins County Central High School won the KHSAA boy’s division while Mary Aldridge of Western Hills High School in Franklin County won the KHSAA girl’s division.
In the KHSAA team competition, Trigg County High School placed first, followed by Henderson County High School then Anderson County High School. Results of the KHSAA competition are available online at khsaa.org.
The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, an agency of the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet, is responsible for the conservation of fish and wildlife resources and for boating projects in the state. A commissioner appointed by the Fish and Wildlife Commission heads the department. The commission, which is responsible for department policy, is a nine member bipartisan body appointed by the governor from a list of candidates voted upon by sportsmen's organizations in each of nine districts.
