South Carolina’s Cliff Pitts Wildlife Area in Laurens County is Open for Turkey Hunting this Spring
The recently acquired Cliff Pitts Wildlife Management Area along the Reedy River in western Laurens County will be open for turkey hunting this spring.
Cliff Pitts Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is 509 acres in size and has a good wild turkey population, according to Gerald Moore, S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wildlife biologist based in Union. Cliff Pitts WMA can be accessed from Armstrong Road off SC Highway 252 across from Boyd Mill Pond.
Turkey season will open April 1 and will remain open through May 1, but only Mondays through Saturdays—on all WMA’s statewide, hunting is not allowed on Sundays. The bag limit is two gobblers (male turkeys) per day and five per season, and all turkeys harvested must be tagged at the point of kill. Turkey tags are free and may be obtained at regional DNR offices and information distribution sites that were previously big game check stations.

At Cliff Pitts WMA, year-around access is available to the Reedy River for fishing. About 1.8 miles of scenic river frontage are available for public use on the WMA and this river frontage offers good fishing. A public dove field is being prepared for dove season in early September, and several scattered wildlife openings are being planted for deer, turkey and small game. In addition to the good wild turkey population, white-tailed deer, cottontail rabbit, gray squirrel and a variety of furbearers are abundant on this property.
A WMA permit is required to hunt on the property but is not required for fishing. This area will provide local and regional sportsmen and sportswomen significant opportunity for public hunting and fishing in a portion of Laurens County where there has previously been little public land.
