Broadwater, Van Natta and Alvarez, Golden in Arizona

Every year target shooters and national teams from around the globe flock to the Arizona Cup to compete and earn valuable world ranking points. For US archers it’s also a critical tournament to earn points towards making the US Archery Team. Compound archers shoot a 72 arrow, 50 meter ranking round to seed them for the single elimination, 15-arrow match. The recurve archers shoot a 144 arrow ranking round at distances of 90, 70, 50 and 30 meters to seed them for the single elimination, set system match that are shot at 70 meters.
In the Men’s Compound division, what started out as 64 ranked archers going for gold was quickly cut down to eight remaining archers; seven of which were all shooting Hoyt. Jesse Broadwater (USA), Reo Wilde (USA), Julio Fierro (MEX), Kevin Wilkey (USA), Bridger Deaton (USA), Greg Poole (USA) and Rodolfo Gonzalez (MEX).
As the matches progressed, Julio Fierro (MEX), fresh off of a win at the Versus tournament faced Hoyt’s Kevin Wilkey for Bronze. In a tricky wind, Fierro and Wilkey Tied with 144/150 and settled the match with Fierro shooting an X in a one arrow shoot-off to take the bronze. In the gold medal match the number one ranked Jesse Broadwater would face the number two ranked Reo Wilde. Both archers went arrow for arrow and tied at 146/150, forcing a one arrow shoot-off. Broadwater won the match with his well placed final arrow. “Reo and I have been going back and forth all season, I know I have my work cut out for me every time we face off,” Said Broadwater.
The Women’s Compound matches were equally as intense as the men’s. Among the final eight were Hoyt shooters Jamie Van Natta (USA), Gabriela Trevino (MEX), Erika Jones (USA) and Linda Ochoa (MEX). In the final gold medal match, Van Natta faced Trevino in windy conditions that would nearly push your aim over to the next target; Van Natta dominated the match with a 138 to Trevino’s 130. “When the wind is blowing this hard, you just have to make the best shot you can, trust your equipment and all of your hard work in practice. I’m happy to take the win.” said Van Natta.
Talent in the Men’s Recurve is always stacked deep at the AZ-Cup. Canada’s Crispin Duenas shot a very impressive number one ranked qualifying round of 1339, however, he got knocked out in the semi-finals letting Hoyt shooters Brady Ellison (USA) and Luis Alvarez (MEX) go for gold. In a nail-biting close match, Alvarez clinched the win with 6 set points over Ellison’s 4.
In the Women’s Recurve division, Olympic medalist and USA team member, Khatuna Lorig won her way into the gold medal match. Shooting arrow for arrow against her opponent, Lorig ultimately tied with 5 set point and was edged out in a closest to center shoot-off to take the silver. Olympic silver medalist, Aida Roman (MEX) had a strong showing and finished in 4th.
