National Geographic Adventure has honored the Big Agnes Fishhook UL2 tent with a 2013 Gear of the Year award. The award is one of the most prestigious in the outdoor industry, recognizing apparel and gear for innovation in design materials and performance.
“We are proud to receive our third award for the Fishhook UL2, after already being recognized by Outside magazine and Gear Junkie,” says Bill Gamber, Big Agnes co-founder and president. “The Fishhook is the first tent of its kind to effectively eliminate zippers, and this honor validates the hard work and commitment of our team who helped make this innovative product idea come to life.”
The Fishhook UL2 tent is a freestanding, three-season, ultra-light backpacking tent with a spacious interior featuring a zipperless door and vestibule. It weighs in at only 3 pounds 3 ounces. Instead of zippers, the Fishhook UL2 tent door uses a simple clip and loop closure system to seal the door and vestibule to maintain protection from the elements. The Fishhook UL2 retails for $399.95.
“You don’t quite realize just how intrusive the sound of a tent zipper is until the zipper is no longer there,” writes National Geographic Adventure editor, Steve Casimiro “Big Agnes Fishhook UL2 replaced the tradition tent and fly closures with simple overlapping doors that seal with hooks and loops. The effect is like switching from a diesel engine to a hybrid; there’s the rustle of nylon, but nothing else.”
