UAF’s Anderson Sweeps Smallbore Events to Close 2013 NJOSC

In the lore and proud tradition of Alaska-Fairbanks rifle shooting stands Matt Emmons and Jamie (Beyerle) Gray as the school’s greatest champions. But if today’s results from the 2013 National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships (NJOSC) mean anything, Ryan Anderson (Fairbanks, Alaska) may just be the next in line.
Anderson closed the 2013 rifle/pistol Junior Olympic event by sweeping both smallbore (.22 caliber) events including Three-Position and Prone. Combined with his silver-medal finish in the 10m Air Rifle event, Anderson showcased his prowess as USA’s rising rifleman.
“I came in and it really wasn’t a goal match for me,” acknowledged Anderson. “I had a goal match last month (NCAA Rifle Championships) and one coming up a month from now (World Cup USA). But that doesn’t mean I didn’t come here to win, so I’m pretty happy on how things turned out.”
Anderson greatest dominance was showcased in the Three-Position event where he walked into the event finals with an 11-point lead over Dan Geer (Colorado Springs, Colo.), and he’d expand that by 1.2 points by the end of the 10-shot final as the only competitor of eight to shoot over 100 (101.1) in the final. Air Rifle gold medalist Connor Davis (Shelbyville, Colo.) would secure another medal with bronze.
Mitchell Van Patten (Meridian, Idaho) would be the lone J2 (15-17-year-olds) competitor to compete in the final and would finish sixth overall and would as the high J2 finisher. As he was in the Air Rifle event, Alex Patajo (Puyallup, Wash.) would finish as the high J3 (14-and-under) finisher.
Anderson would battle Air Force rifle shooter David Higgins (San Clemente, Calif.) through all 130 shots of Prone as the two would have identical scores of 594 and 597 in each of their two relays. They’d follow that up with identical 105 finals as neither athlete was willing to give in to the other. Tied after 130 shots, they’d decide this match on the 131st tie-breaker shot for gold as Anderson would shoot a 10.1 while Higgins managed a 10.0. West Virginia’s Patrick Sunderman(Farmington, Minn.) would finish as the bronze medalist, 8.4 points behind both Anderson and Higgins.
The high J2 finisher would be Justin Nissen (Live Oak, Calif.) while 11-year-old William Shaner(Silt, Colo.) finished as the high J3 finisher.
Also to note in the Men’s Rifle events, Kentucky’s Cody Manning (London, Ky.) and Anderson’s UAF teammate Tim Sherry (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) finished the competition as the event’s only three-event finalists. Manning finished fifth (Air), sixth (Prone) and seventh (3P). Sherry finished seventh (Air) and earned a pair of fifth-place finishes in the smallbore events.
