Free Indiana Youth Fishing Day in South Bend, May 11

Families can learn to fish during the second annual free youth fishing day at Pinhook Park in South Bend on Saturday, May 11.

The event is sponsored by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Fish & Wildlife and Division of Law Enforcement, the South Bend Parks and Recreation Department, and local conservation groups and businesses.

Before the event, the DNR will stock 400 keeper-size rainbow trout in Pinhook Lagoon.

Participants will receive basic instruction on casting and fishing, fish cleaning, water safety and fish identification. After the instruction, youth anglers will go fishing with fishing coaches. Fishing poles, bait and tackle will be provided.

The event will end with an awards ceremony for all anglers who complete the clinic and prizes presented for the five biggest fish caught.

There also will be a DNR electroshock boat demonstration. A fish boil lunch will be provided by the Michiana Steelheaders to all participants and their families.

The event is open to the first 100 youths, ages 7-17, who register. Participants can register at sbpark.org or by calling (574) 299-4765.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is the agency of the U.S. state of Indiana charged with maintaining natural areas such as state parks, state forests, recreation areas, etc. There are many divisions within the DNR and each has a specific role. The DNR is not only responsible for maintaining resource areas but also manages Indiana's fish and wildlife, reclaims coal mine ground, manages forested areas, aids in the management of wildlife on private lands, enforces Indiana's conservation laws, and many other duties not named here. According to the department's website, their mission is "to protect, enhance, preserve, and wisely use natural, cultural, and recreational resources for the benefit of Indiana's citizens through professional leadership, management, and education."
