ArtSpring at Canaan Valley Resort State Park is Memorial weekend, May 24-26. The opening-of-summer event features birding, crafts and youth activities, clogging, Motown Steel Concert, hayrides and other family oriented activities.
“It’s going to a full weekend with a wide variety of activities,” said Lenore Testerman with Canaan Resort Services. Most activities will begin or occur at the Nature Center.
ArtSpring is a High Mountain Arts Festival in Tucker County. Events are scheduled throughout Canaan Valley and the historic towns of Davis, Thomas, and Parsons. A beginner’s bird watching hike at 10 a.m. and a Poisonous Plants of West Virginia walk at 2 p.m. are interpretative programs to learn more about nature. There is no charge to participate.

Kite making and other outdoor crafts are scheduled from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and are repeated on Sunday. Crafter and vendor displays coincide with craft time. At 10 a.m., relay games for kids, a family nature hike and clogging with the West Virginia Cloggers are scheduled. The Cloggers will be demonstrating this dance style and welcome participation. Clogging is repeated at 3 p.m. A Cornhole Tournament at 1 p.m. and live entertainment featuring Motown Steel, a steel drum band, are good afternoon fun. The 2 p.m. nature hike explores wildflowers. A concert by Motown Steel at Canaan Valley Lodge is scheduled from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. with no admission charge. An 8 p.m. bonfire is planned.

A Bald Knob hike that includes a scenic chairlift ride starts at the Ski Area Gift Shop at 9 a.m. The cost is $7 for adults and $5 for youth or seniors. This approximately two-hour hike is moderate difficulty and participants should bring water and snack. Choose Bingo or a Club Run Jaunt guided hike at 10 a.m. The Club Run Hike begins that the trailhead in the cabin area. A horseshoe tournament (11 a.m.), kickball (1 p.m.) and guided hike: “Is It a Pine?” (2 p.m.) provide a broad variety of activities to enjoy at no charge.
Wagon rides are offered Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings from 4 to 7 p.m. with a charge of $7 for adults and $4 for youth. Saturday and Sunday conclude with bonfires at 8 p.m.
