EverStart Series Northern Division Heads to Maryland’s Potomac River

The EverStart Series is headed to the Potomac River June 20-22 for a tournament presented by Mercury when as many as 300 pros and co-anglers take to the water for the second of four stops in the Northern Division.

“This spring, fishing on the Potomac has been a lot slower than it has been in past seasons,” said Castrol pro David Dudley of Lynchburg, Va., who has three top-10 finishes on the Potomac River in Walmart FLW Tour competition. “The great thing about the river is that it hardly ever changes. The fishing is starting to pick back up, though, and things should be getting back to normal.

“It’s been a really wet season across the United States,” Dudley continued. “There were some heavy rainfalls here last week, but the tide flushed the water out pretty quickly. I 100-percent guarantee that this event will be won by someone fishing the grass.”

Dudley said that tournament anglers would be targeting the bays and creeks of the tidal fishery. He expects that the tournament winner will fish in Aquia, Chickamoxen or Mattawoman Creeks or Belmont Bay.

“I think that frogs, flipping baits and Chatterbaits are going to be the top bait choices,” Dudley said. “It’s going to take an 18½-pound-a-day average to win the EverStart tournament; the winner will have right around 55 pounds.”

Anglers will take off from Smallwood State Park located at 2750 Sweden Point Road in Marbury, Md., at 6 a.m. each day. Weigh-in will be held at the takeoff location on Thursday and Friday beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday’s final weigh-in will be held at Walmart located at 40 Drury Drive in La Plata, Md., beginning at 3 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

Pros will fish for a top award of $40,000 plus a Ranger Z518 with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard if Ranger Cup guidelines are met. Co-anglers will cast for a top award consisting of a Ranger Z117 with 90-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and $5,000 if Ranger Cup guidelines are met.

The EverStart Series consists of five divisions – Central, Northern, Southeast, Texas and Western. Each division consists of four tournaments and competitors will be vying for valuable points in each division that could earn them the Strike King Angler of the Year title, which allows them to fish the 2014 Forrest Wood Cup.
