Video: The Physics of Firing an AK-47 Underwater

While firing an AK-type rifle underwater may have few real-world applications, YouTube channel Smarter Every Day‘s host Destin is certainly eager to explain the physics of how the 7.62x39mm round behaves while submersed. To capture the shot at a staggering 27,450 frames per second, Destin acquired one of the more expensive cameras out there. It’s called the Phantom v1610 and it reportedly retails for a cool $100,000–and that’s for the base model. Destin designed a mirrored “periscope” so that the camera can record the shot without ever being underwater.

It beats building a single-use aquarium.

Along with the camera came TheSlowMoGuys, high-speed camera experts who operated the Phantom.
