The Coastal Conservation Association Maryland (CCA MD) today announced its first annual Red/Trout Catch & Release Tournament to be held Saturday, Sept. 7, and Sunday, Sept. 8, around Crisfield, MD. Anglers will compete in three categories-light tackle, fly and kayak.
“During the past two years, we have seen an impressive increase in the numbers of redfish and speckled trout in many areas of the Chesapeake Bay and especially around Crisfield,” reported Tony Friedrich, CCA MD executive director. “This is a major boon for recreational anglers. At one point, there were significant populations of these two species in the Bay. We hope this catch and release tournament will draw attention to the value of reds and specks. They could become the ‘fish of the Bay’ in the future.”
Awards will be presented in each of the three categories for first, second and third place based on the total number of inches of fish caught-speckled trout and/or redfish-during one day. A $500 award will go to the CCA member who catches the largest speck. Decisions will be based on photos submitted to the judging panel.
CCA MD has arranged for a block of rooms at Captain Tyler’s Motel in Crisfield for participating anglers, and Captain Tyler’s Crabhouse will host the awards ceremony Sunday afternoon. Additionally, the Crabhouse will provide specials for anglers, including all you can eat crabs for $25.
“In addition to promoting reds and specks through this tournament, CCA Maryland hopes to add to Crisfield’s economy,” Friedrich said. “Crisfield has a long history as a fishing community and landmark of the Chesapeake Bay.”
