Video: The Proper Way to Dance with a Raccoon

Self-proclaimed “hillbilly” Mark Brown has no trouble finding dance partners, just as long as his pet raccoon and the tunes of Aretha Franklin are close at hand.

Few people consider raccoons when shopping for a new pet. In addition to not being recommended by many animal experts, raccoons are temperamental, difficult to train, and can carry any number of diseases. Even in the states where keeping a raccoon is legal, they are generally considered exotic pets–if not pests. Owners who feed these animals like overly mischievous cats will find that raccoons fare poorly on cat food and are predisposed to becoming obese. Adult raccoons will also bite incessantly.

According to the Daily Mail, Brown doesn’t seem to mind the overly affectionate nips from his overweight pet, named “Gunshow.” The raccoon isn’t officially Brown’s and is still quite wild, but Brown seems to enjoy the animal’s occasional visits.

“He’s been coming around around since he was a little bitty fellow and sometimes he scratches on the door and he comes in the house and he has his way,” Brown said.

In the video below, Brown teaches Gunshow an innovated dance to Aretha Franklin’s “Chain of Fools.” There’s a surprise ending.

Apparently Brown discovered the secret to avoiding raccoon bites, albeit in a rather unorthodox manner:
