Colorado’s South Park Shooting Range to Open Aug. 17

A formal ceremony with Park County Commissioners, acting Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) Director Steve Yamashita and partners from the South Park Shooting Association will kick off the long awaited opening of the South Park Shooting Range on August 17.

Eleven years in the making, the range will open to the public with a formal ceremony at 10 am on Saturday, August 17.  After the ceremony, the public is encouraged to tour the facility and shoot if they are interested.  Opening day will be free of charge.

“Colorado Parks and Wildlife is thrilled to have a role in opening this new facility for Park County and the rest of Colorado,” said Reid Dewalt, Area Wildlife Manager for South Park.  “Partnering with Park County and the South Park Shooting Association has highlighted the work that can be accomplished when we can agree on a goal and work together for the good of the community.”

The South Park Shooting Range currently offers two, one hundred yard rifle ranges and two, fifty yard pistol ranges.  Plans for expansion are in process with shot gun ranges, longer rifle ranges, and archery ranges expected in the future.  Normal operating hours will be from 9-5 everyday, and shooters will pay $10 to use the range per visit. The funds raised through admissions will be used to further manage and upgrade the range.

Big thanks goes to all of the partners of the effort including the Park County Commissioners, South Park Shooting Association, United States Fish & Wildlife Service, CPW Commissioners, Park County Road and Bridge Department, and Beartooth Capital.

DIRECTIONS TO THE SOUTH PARK SHOOTING RANGE:

The range is located approximately one mile southeast of Highway 285 on Park County Road 15, which is also known as the Elkhorn Road.   Park County Road 15 is located approximately half a mile from the town of Como on the opposite side of Highway 285.  A sign and gated entrance mark the entrance to the range.
