The United States Freshwater Fishing Federation (USF3) is proud to announce that the U.S. Fishing Team will be attending the International Sport Fishing Confederation (CIPS) 60th World Coarse Fishing Championships on the Zeranski Channel, Warsaw, Poland on September 14-15, 2013. The event is an all-species bankfishing contest. More than 35 nations will be participating in the event, making it the largest international fishing competition in the world.
Captain Mark Green of Ariz, will lead the U.S. Team along with team members, Val Walters, Ind.; Zoltan Marten, Wash.; Gareth Purnell, UK; and Bob Wessels, UK. Lynette Jennifer Sierer will act as team assistant. International teams will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in team and individual categories.
The fishing in Poland will be focused on four primary species (bream, silver bream, roach and bleak). Bream are a primarily bottom feeding fish similar in shape to a large gizzard shad in America, but with a much larger mouth and feeding habits similar to the common carp. Roach and bleak are mid-water feeders similar to American golden shiners. Anglers typically use 43-foot carbon fiber poles, and precisely and delicately present very small baits to very wary fish. Finesse is crucial, as several hundred anglers compete side-by-side along a two-mile stretch of canal.
It has been a busy year for U.S. anglers competing in CIPS world championships. The USF3 recently hosted the Ice Fishing World Championship in Wausau, Wis., on February 16-17, 2013. U.S. ice-angler Chad Schaub took home an individual bronze. The U.S. fly-fishing team just finished competing in Norway. Now, the U.S coarse fishing team is set for Poland.
The CIPS governs and organizes world championship angling events in various disciplines, both freshwater and saltwater. The most popular contests include coarse (men, women, junior and disabled), ice, carp, bass, fly and surf fishing competitions. In 2014, the USF3 plans to add carp and bass teams to the international competitions.
Individuals or companies wishing to support our national fishing teams, including the 2013 U.S. Coarse Team, can contribute at http://donate.unitedcharitableprograms.org/SearchDetails.aspx?ProgID=143544. The USF3 is also actively looking for organizations or individuals that would like to help organize and develop national teams for women, disabled and bass fishing.
