California DFG Publishes Eastern Sierra Back Country Fishing Guide

As the weather gets warmer California anglers may be asking themselves, “where can I go fishing in the back country?” A new guide published by the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) answers those and many other questions.
The Eastern Sierra Back Country Fishing Guide is designed to provide anglers with a quick, informative and accurate account of the distribution of fisheries in back country high elevation lakes. This guide does not address front country waters, defined as lakes and streams that are accessible by vehicle.
The individual lake information is based on DFG surveys conducted from 2001 to present, with some surveys dating back to 1995. More than 3,000 lakes have been surveyed for fish and amphibians and related habitat features.
Most of the waters covered in this guide require some experience navigating in the back country and may involve extremely challenging physical effort to locate. It does not provide specific routes or navigation information.
Most of the lakes lie within U.S. Forest Service lands managed as Wilderness and usually require back country permits for overnight use.
Most back country fisheries are based on self-sustaining populations of trout and do not need regular trout stocking to maintain fish populations.
