Video: Field Dressing a Deer Using Obsidian Flakes
OutdoorHub Reporters 11.04.13
Here’s a rare challenge that few hunters ever undertake. At first glance, using only obsidian flakes to dress a deer may seem impossibly difficult, but the sharpness of this volcanic glass makes the task easier than expected. In fact, obsidian is many times sharper than even the finest-forged steel blades. This quality is due to the brittle nature of the mineraloid, which fractures into flakes with cutting edges so fine they are smooth even under a electron microscope.
Below, a hunter carefully uses an obsidian flake to butcher a deer.
